Nuclear Weapon Development Timeline: Key Milestones

The nuclear weapon development timeline traces a defining transformation in military technology, from early theoretical discoveries to the creation of weapons capable of unprecedented destruction and global strategic influence.

This history encompasses scientific breakthroughs, wartime research, nuclear testing, arms races, and international efforts to control proliferation, revealing how technological progress reshaped modern warfare and global security.

The nuclear weapon development timeline began with discoveries in atomic physics. In 1896, Henri Becquerel identified radioactivity, while subsequent research by Ernest Rutherford, Niels Bohr, and others clarified atomic structure and energy release.

In December 1938, German scientists Otto Hahn and Fritz Strassmann demonstrated nuclear fission, which Lise Meitner and Otto Frisch correctly interpreted in early 1939. The finding showed that a chain reaction could release immense energy.

The Manhattan Project, led by the United States during the Second World War, transformed this scientific knowledge into weapons. The first nuclear test, Trinity, took place in New Mexico on July 16, 1945. Atomic bombs were used against Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August.

After 1945, the Soviet Union tested its first atomic bomb in 1949, followed by the United Kingdom in 1952. The United States conducted the first thermonuclear test in 1952, and later China, France, and other states developed nuclear arsenals.
